Policies

Course Description: Scope of network security practitioner responsibility, security architecture models, security management practices, physical security, telecommunications security, access controls, monitoring, auditing, risk, response and recovery, cryptography, data communications security, and malicious code. Prerequisite: CSC130 or CSC114.
Dates and questions for homeworks will be announced in class and will also be posted on the web site .
One weeks notice will be given on homework assignments. Material covered in lecture will be included on the tests.

Grading:

Tests: 1 Midterm worth 100 points and 1 Final worth 200 points. Test Dates to be announced.

Homeworks: There will be numerous assignments worth 10-15 points each. No late homework will be accepted. You will always have one week from the time a homework is announced to the time that it is due. Some homeworks will consist of reading about a subject and then participating in class in a discussion the following week. You will be graded on your participation in class and apparent grasp of the material at hand.

Labs, Exercises and Participation: There will be multiple labs and Exercises throughout the semester. They are worth 10-15 points each. Due to the setup required for each lab, there will be no make-up labs. You will be able to drop your lowest lab score.Participation in class is encouraged and several 10 point participation point labs will be assigned throughtout the semester.

Quizzes: There will be several quizzes worth 25 points each. Contact me in advance if you must miss a quiz. A makeup quiz will not be given if I am not contacted in advance.

Practical Quizzes: There will be a couple of Practical quizzes worth 25 points each. Due to the setup required for a practical quiz, no makeups will be given.

Reports/Presentations:There will be at least 2 reports on various security topics due during the course of the semester. Reports will be given orally to the class and will last no more than 10 minutes. Your presentations will be worth 25 points each.

Grading:

The highest score in the class will be set as the maximum, you must make the following percentages of that score for the corresponding grades. Your lowest quiz and lab scores will be thrown out in the calculation of your grade.

A: 94% and up
B: 84%-93%
C: 74%-83%
D: 64%-73%
F: less than 64%

Schedule:

Students should check the schedule on the web often as it will be updated throught the semester. All important due dates and extra information will be posted the the class schedule during the semester.

Note that there are colums in the syllabus for the online as well as the classroom sections. Be sure that you look at a specific column for your section, since the assignments will be different for the online sections and the possibly for the classroom sections as well.

Attendance:

This class will be taught with interactive exercises during class and lab time, so I seriously advise you to attend every scheduled class. Important (testable) information will be given during class that is not in the text.

Exams:

If you will for any reason be unable to attend class on an exam date, please let me know beforehand so that we can make other arrangements. If you miss a test without having made arrangements beforehand, you should assume that a makeup test will not be given. You cannot pass the course without taking all the exams.

Office Hours:

My office hours are posted on the web at http://www.csit.parkland.edu/~smauney /office_hours.html . Please come see me during my office hours if you have any questions. I will typically also be available immediately before each class period in the classroom, and at the class breaks.

No Food or Drinks:

It is departmental policy that no food or drinks are permitted in the lab at any time. Computer equipment, carpeting and furniture have been damaged in the past, and we want to prevent this from happening in the future.

Courtesy:

If you carry a pager or cell phone to class, please set the device to vibrate mode before class, if your device supports it. Otherwise, please turn the ringer off.

Class and Lab time are not for surfing the net or checking email or playing games or anything besides learning the subject matter; these activities can be very distracting to other students who would like to pay attention. Feel free to do these things at another time or in another place.

Student Email Account:

Students should access their Parkland email accounts at http://stu.parkland.edu at least weekly to obtain information about course or college announcements.Students can call (217) 351-2561 for help with their student email accounts.There is someone available at this number to answer questions from 2-4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Withdrawal Procedure:

It is the student's responsibility to monitor his/her progress in this course. If after consulting with the instructor, the student feels it becomes necessary to withdraw from this course, it is the responsibility of the student to do so.Please check with the office of admission to find out the final date for withdrawal with "W" grade from courses ending at midterm.If you have questions about the withdrawal procedure, se you Parkland College catalog.
