CSC250: Introduction to Computer Security

Homework 1

Using the tools discussed in class and any other tools that you choose (try adaware or spybot search and destroy), do a scan of your system and prepare a 2 page typed report on the security of your home computer or the computer of a friend. Be prepared to present this to the class. Things that you should inclued in the report:

• Description of System, OS, type of network connection, software inventory
• Problems found on your system
• Likely severity/risk associated with each security problem
• Steps you took to mitigate the problem
• The knowledge Base Q number
• How to patch or fix the problem, and where to get the patch.
• can the problem be prevented?

e-mail me smauney@parkland.edu your completed homework before class meets next week. Be sure to include the subject: CSC250 Homework 1. You should also be prepared to give a presentation in class about your home computers' situation next week so I suggest you bring a copy of the report to class.

The presentation you give on your computer's security will be worth 25 points.

The written portion of your report will be worth 15 points.
