CSC171 Linux Installation and Administration

Linux, a free operating system that
has been available since the early 1990's is becoming very popular with
businesses and computer users everywhere.
Students taking the course
CSC171 will learn basic Linux administration, user management and best practices for managing
Linux systems.
The course is taught in a lab setting with each student having an account on the
networked Linux systems, additionally each student will install and manage a
linux system on the internet during the course.
In CSC171 Students will learn:
- GNU and Linux commands
- Devices and Linux Filesystems
- Booting, initialization, shutdown and runlevels
- Creating and maintaining documentation for Linux systems
- Linux administrative tasks such as managing users, groups and environment
variables
- Installing and configuring the X windowing interface
