Course Description

Create dynamic websites using various web authoring software packages. Focus on navigation, user interface design, information architecture, and creation of artwork for the Internet. Emphasis on presentation skills and becoming advanced users of web authoring software. This course will use Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks CS3 Web Standard software. You will become familiar working with these programs, create several project Web sites and a Final Web site.

In addition to projects there will be occasional quizzes and a midterm and final project/exam.

Meeting Time:

This course is a hybrid course and will have a weekly classroom session. This session will be in room D208 from 10:00 - 11:50, Tuesdays. In addition to the classroom meeting, projects, quizzes and exams will be completed online through the Angel system. Some students who are enrolled in the course have communicated that they will be unable to attend the classroom session and have elected to complete the class online. If you have done so, you will either have to work on the lab work in Room D208 or D207 when the rooms are avaiilable (no other classes meeting) or purhcase the current version of the Adobe Creative Suite Web Standard software. The version in the labs is CS3 and the textbooks required for the course are for that version of the software, if you purchase the current version (CS4), there will be differences in menus and panels but all of the functionality, plus more is there. If you get the current version you will likely have to make some adjustments when completing the lab work. If you are able to attend the classroom sessions at least sporatically I encourage you to do so. I will attempt to record class sessions but it often takes considerable time for the material covered in class to become available to students who have not attended.

Course Materials

Required Textbooks:

Adobe Flash CS3 Professional, Classroom In A Book, Adobe Press, ISBN 0-321-49982-4
Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual, Mcfarland, Oreilly ISBN 0-596-51043-8
In addition to the textbooks I will often use online resources.

Storage Device

A USB/Flash Drive is recommended if you are working in any of the Parkland Computer Labs. You should not save your work to the Lab Computer's hard drive. Work found on these drives is deleted daily.

Software:

You should at minimum have the latest version of the Mozilla Firefox Browser and Internet Explorer browsers available to work on this course. You only need a text editor to create your code, but if you have a WYSIWYG html editor you or JavaScript coding tool, you may certainly use them. In the classroom sessions we will work extensively with Dreamweaver, Flash and minimally with Fireworks. We will complete all eleven chapters of the Flash Classroom In A Book Projects. Each will be submitted for a grade.

Course Requirements

You will have weekly reading and projects assigned. As we complete chapters in the textbook, quizzes will be assigned. There will also be a midterm exam and a final exam. These exams will have a project based component and may have an objective component similar to the quizzes, which will include multiple choice and true/false questions.

The weekly schedule will be posted on the Angel Course Management system . Only items that will be graded typically appear on the Angel calendar. They will also be listed as milestones under Tasks in the Guide pane. All projects, quizzes and exams will also be posted in the lessons tab. You will always be able to see what the current week's requirements are by logging on to the Angel System and looking in the Lessons tabs. The due dates will be displayed on the Angel Calendar for any project, quiz or other graded activity.

For the course topics and tentative semester schedule please log on the Angel Course Management system. http://angel.parkland.edu

Grades

Each project, quiz and exam will be given a point value. You will earn some or all points for each project, quiz and exam submitted. The total of points earned divided by the total points possible will be produce your total percentage.

Letter Grade - Total Percentage

A - 90% or more
B - 80 - 89%
C - 70 - 79%
D - 60 - 69%
F - below 60%

Policies

Regualar attendance is encouraged and can be a determining factor on a border line grade. I plan to have at minimum audio recordings of each session and will check your virtual attendance weekly to determine your participation as well as submission of the work. Late submission will be accepted up until the first classroom section meeting following the due date of a project. This applies to the online section as well. A 15% reduction in points awarded will be applied to any late submissions, unless arrangements have been made with the instructor or if you have the need for an academic accommodation such as increased time allowed for testing or project work.

Student and Angel accounts

Typically when you enroll in your first Parkland College course your student email account is created. You may find your account information at https://accountlookup.parkland.edu/. You can log on the the Angel course management system at http://angel.parkland.edu. Students should only use their Parkland student email and/or Angel mail for communication to the instructor. They should check their email accounts (both student and Angel) multiple times during the week to obtain course information or college announcements. This is absolutely essential in the online section and Angel will also be utilized for the classroom sections.

Cheating

Anyone found to be cheating will receive a zero for that assignment and the incident will be reported to the Dean of Student Services, subsequent offenses could result in a failing grade for the course and removal from the academic program. Cheating includes copying assignments from the Internet or another student (from this or previous semesters). The complete policy is found on pages 3-5 of the Student Policies and Procedures Manual (Fall 2006).

Late Work

Assignments, projects, quizzes or tests are expected to be completed by the due date. Late work or make-ups will only be accepted until the next classroom meeting after the due date. The project, quiz or exam score will be lowered by 15% unless you have a registered need for an academic accommodation

It is your responsibility to find out what assignments you may have missed. In the case of extreme emergencies such as a death in the family or serious illness please contact me. We will make an appointment to discuss your situation and determine what makeup activities will be allowed.

Core Values

We believe strongly in the Core Values espoused by Parkland College: Honesty and Integrity, Fairness and Just Treatment, Responsibility, Multiculturalism, Education, and Public Trust. Essentially, these values set guidelines for how we should treat you and how you should treat each other (and us). Failure to be respectful of one another or to maintain ethical behavior will not be tolerated.
