Each week there will be tasks assigned. Those tasks may include some or all of the following:
There will also be a midterm project or exam and a final project or exam. Both the midterm and the final exam must be passed in order to pass the course. Class participation is expected. Participation for classroom sections includes attendance, working on projects and taking part in discussions. In the online section, participation is regularly logging on, prompt submission of projects, posts to discussion threads and prompt submission of quizzes and exams.
The weekly schedule will be posted on the Angel Course Management system . Only items that will be graded typically appear on the Angel calendar. They will also be listed as milestones under Tasks in the Guide pane. All projects, quizzes and exams will also be posted in the lessons tab. You will always be able to see what the current week's requirements are by logging on to the Angel System and looking in the Lessons tabs. The due dates will be displayed on the Angel Calendar for any project, quiz or other graded activity.
Each semester the course content is revised, so the schedule will be determined typically from week to week. We will complete all 8 chapters of the Discovering Computers text. The only graded activities for Discovering Computers will be the quizzes. Typically you will read and complete the chapters projects and one "In The Lab" project for three Word chapters, three Excel chapters, two Access chapters and two PowerPoint chapters. For the three Word, three Excel, two Access and two PowerPoint chapters you will be assigned an "In The Lab" project. For Access you will also be assigned the Apply Your Knowledge and Extend Your Knowledge projects for both Chapters. If you know in advance that you will not attend class either in person or online then notify me and I will give you an alternate assignment which you must complete in addition to any missed project. You may discuss with me whether future assignments can be completed if you are unable to complete your tasks during the week they are due.
For the course topics and tentative semester schedule please log on the Angel Course Management system. http://angel.parkland.edu
Grades will be determined by the percentage of total points awarded. The midterm and final must be submitted and have a passing grade in order for a student to pass this course. The letter grades will be based on the following criteria:
Skills Based Projects over Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
Objective Quizzes over the material from the Technology in Action Textbook
Midterm Project/Exam - Covering Word and Excel
Final Project/Exam - Covering Access and PowerPoint
A - 90% or above
B - 80 - 89%
C - 70 - 79%
D - 60 - 69%
F - Below 60%
If a student doesn't attend class more than four times, no points will be awarded for class participation in determining the final grade. In the online section, failure to logon, participate in discussions, or submit a project or quiz during more than one calendar week will result in a loss of all participation points. Late submission will be accepted up until the first classroom section meeting following the due date of a project. This applies to the online section as well. A 15% reduction in points awarded will be applied to any late submissions, unless arrangements have been made with the instructor or if you have the need for an academic accommodation such as increased time allowed for testing or project work.
Typically when you enroll in your first Parkland College course your student email account is created. You may find your account information at https://accountlookup.parkland.edu/. Students should only use their Parkland student email mail for communication to the instructor. They should check their email accounts (both student and Angel) multiple times during the week to obtain course information or college announcements. This is absolutely essential in the online section and Angel will also be utilized for the classroom sections.
Anyone found to be cheating will receive a zero for that assignment and the incident will be reported to the Dean of Student Services, subsequent offenses could result in a failing grade for the course and removal from the academic program. Cheating includes copying assignments from the Internet or another student (from this or previous semesters). The complete policy is found on pages 3-5 of the Student Policies and Procedures Manual (Fall 2006).
Assignments, projects, quizzes or tests are expected to be completed by the due date. Late work or make-ups will only be accepted until the next classroom meeting after the due date. The project, quiz or exam score will be lowered by 15% unless you have a registered need for an academic accommodation
It is your responsibility to find out what assignments you may have missed. In the case of extreme emergencies such as a death in the family or serious illness please contact me. We will make an appointment to discuss your situation and determine what makeup activities will be allowed.
